Mathematica tips from Tom:

1) Getting the software downloaded -

A) Folks with a *.harvard.edu email. Using this link might be the easiest, but I cant test it. http://icg.fas.harvard.edu/software/mathematica/license/ When I fill out the form at the bottom of the page, there is no Department or Status that applies to me. When I pick one, such as fas student, a user id and password dialog pops up. User id for what?? If anyone knows, please tell us. If you have a *.harvard.edu email, and are getting stuck, let us know, and try options B or C if you have a chance.

B) PC users - (if not covered by the Harvard or MIT options above) Download these directories of files to your computer: http://arep.med.harvard.edu/101_00/Math/PC/ http://arep.med.harvard.edu/101_00/Math/PC__8_3/

C) Linux users. Were still working on the internet download for folks who cant use the link http://icg.fas.harvard.edu/software/mathematica/license/ , which requires a *.harvard.edu e-mail. If you are in this category, please let me know asap, so we get the linux version on the ../~bphys101 site.

C) Slow modem only. If you get get to a fast cnxn anywhere with a CD burner, you are all set. If not, let me know, and I will try to get you a CD.

2) Below are some Mathematica instructions for setting up the license once you download the software. I will send a list of your email addresses onto the license folks, and keep my fingers crossed. If you dont get an e-mail with your license key 1-2 days after you do these steps, let me know.

To Install Mathematica:
--Using the CD or downloaded file, start the install program, do the obvious things, until a dialog box opens asking for a password - put in L2482-2405.
--Next you will see two text fields: one labeled MathID which will contain a highlighted number in it, the other one, labeled password, will be blank.
--Be connected to the internet and press the button labeled "Web". A web browser open with several things to fill out.
--Select version 4.2
--Paste the MathID from the dialog box in the next field below.
--Press the continue button at the bottom of the page
-- As the browser page asks for your information, put BioPhysics 101 in one of these fields, to help convince Steve Burns, our site administrator, that you are legit. He will e-mail your final password to the address you type in the email field.
--The next screen will tell you that the password will be sent to our site administrator, and it contains enough additional text to give you false hope - but there is no password - you have to wait for the email.
